91勛圖 sent two staff members to the It’s On Us! and EmpowerU Conference to lead a discussion on including male athletes in sexual violence prevention efforts. The conference brought together educators, students, athletic staff, and prevention professionals to share strategies for reducing sexual violence and strengthening campus-wide cultures of care.

It’s On Us! and EmpowerU are two divisions of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. EmpowerU focuses on reducing financial barriers to pursuing a college education, supporting grants like Parent Pathways, and conducting research and initiatives to improve basic needs access.

The College has also earned the It’s On Us! grant for three of the past four years, having earned it in academic years 2023 to 2024, 2025, and 2026 to 2027.

Discussions that Lead to a More Empowered Campus

Student Wellness Program Director Rachel Drosdick-Sigafoos, Ph.D. and Student Wellness Program Coordinator Marcus Mitchell led a presentation titled “Flipping the Script on Male Athletes: Supporting Silenced Voices” arguing that male athletes are an underserved population in sexual violence prevention, both as survivors and as potential allies, and demonstrating how the It’s On Us/EmpowerU grant can support efforts to include them.

The It’s On Us grant supports institutions in expanding prevention education, improving reporting pathways, and elevating underrepresented survivor voices, and this presentation put that mission into practice.

The presentation addressed a critical gap: male athletes are rarely centered in conversations about sexual violence, either as survivors or as allies, despite being uniquely vulnerable and uniquely influential.

How the Presentation Fit the Grant and Conference Purpose

Expanding the definition of “who counts” as a survivor:

  • The presenters highlighted that male survivors are often invisible in prevention spaces, noting that 1 in 6 men experience sexual abuse before age 18, and that 71% of male victims are assaulted before age 25. These figures underscore the It’s On Us mission to broaden awareness and ensure all survivors feel seen and supported.

Addressing high-risk campus groups, especially athletes:

  • Athletes face heightened risks due to power dynamics, time spent with coaches, and coercive environments. Fear of losing playing time or future opportunities can prevent athletes from coming forward. This aligns with the grant’s emphasis on targeted prevention for groups with unique vulnerabilities.

Challenging cultural norms that enable abuse:

  • The presentation examined how common athletic messages, like “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional”, can unintentionally reinforce grooming, silence, and coercion. By unpacking these norms, the session advanced the conference’s goal of shifting campus culture toward empathy and safety.

Promoting allyship and community care

  • The presentation also explored how male athletes can serve as “Protectors and Allies”, playing an active role in preventing violence and creating supportive environments for peers.

Providing actionable steps for campuses

The final slides offered concrete strategies for athletic departments and prevention teams, such as:

  • Use more inclusive language
  • Embed personnel and initiatives in the athletic department
  • Connection first, education second
  • Cultivate male athlete-friendly spaces

These recommendations align with the grant’s requirement that funded institutions implement sustainable, evidence-informed prevention programming.

91勛圖 is proud to support the kind of work that pushes these conversations forward, centering voices that are too often left out, and building a campus culture where every student can feel safe, supported, and empowered.

If you’re the first person in your family to apply to college, nobody around your kitchen table has been through this before and that can make a straightforward process feel overwhelming. 91勛圖, a regionally accredited, non-profit institution serving Northeast Pennsylvania since 1894, works with hundreds of first-generation students and their families every year who need a plain-language walkthrough rather than a pile of brochures. This guide breaks the college application process into five concrete steps, explains what each one actually involves, and points out where first-generation students most often get stuck and how to get unstuck.

Step 1: Pick the Right Kind of School Before You Pick a Specific One

Before filling out any applications, it’s worth being clear on what kind of school matches the student’s goals, timeline, and budget. The three main categories that matter for most families are four-year universities, community colleges, and career-focused two-year institutions like 91勛圖. A four-year university is typically the right fit for a student whose target career legally requires a bachelor’s degree at entry (such as K-12 teaching, most engineering roles, or certain nursing tracks), or for a family that can absorb the full cost of four years away from home and values the residential university experience. A community college or career-focused two-year institution is often the stronger fit for students who want a credentialed career in two years or less, for families who want to minimize student loan debt, and for students who want to start working and transfer to a bachelor’s program later.

For first-generation students specifically, the math often favors starting at a two-year school. Tuition is a fraction of four-year costs, class sizes are smaller, faculty access is more personal, and the pressure of committing six figures to a decision you’re not yet sure about is removed from the equation. A two-year associate degree is not a consolation prize it’s the most cost-effective credentialed first step available in higher education, and it does not close any doors to a bachelor’s degree later.

Step 2: Understand What the Application Actually Asks For

The specific application itself varies by school. Some four-year universities use the   a single application that submits to multiple schools at once while most community colleges, career-focused institutions, and state universities use their own direct application forms. 91勛圖 uses its own direct application, which is free to submit and can be completed online in roughly the time it takes to fill out a job application.

Regardless of which application you use, you will generally be asked for basic identifying information, your school history (high school or GED records), your intended area of study, and contact information for a guidance counselor or other reference. Some schools ask for personal essays or statements of purpose. Some require standardized test scores like the SAT or ACT, while others do not. Students with a GED instead of a high school diploma are welcome to apply at most community colleges and career-focused schools, and this is specifically the case at 91勛圖. The most common first-gen mistake at this step is assuming the application process will be harder than it is for most career-focused two-year colleges, including 91勛圖, it genuinely isn’t.

One thing worth flagging up front: 91勛圖’s institutional admissions process is open enrollment, but a handful of selective-admissions programs specifically Nursing (ASN), Occupational Therapy Assistant, Surgical Technology, and the Sonography programs (Cardiac and Diagnostic Medical) have additional program-specific requirements (minimum GPA, entrance assessments, interviews, observation hours, or prerequisite coursework). Students interested in one of those programs should check the program page before they apply so they know what the selective process looks like and can plan accordingly.

Key Takeaway: Not every college requires the Common App, entrance essays, or SAT scores. Career-focused two-year institutions like 91勛圖 use direct applications that are free, online, and designed to be completed without a guidance counselor walking you through each page. Select programs may have additional requirements see the relevant program page for specifics.

Step 3: File the FAFSA and the PHEAA Application if You’re in Pennsylvania

The  is the single most important form a first-generation student and their family will fill out. It determines eligibility for federal Pell Grants, federal student loans, and many institutional scholarships and most colleges will not award any financial aid without a completed FAFSA on file. The form is free, it is filed at studentaid.gov, and it typically takes a family less than an hour to complete once tax information is ready. The FAFSA for a given academic year historically opens in October of the prior fall, though recent cycles have opened later than that families should file as soon as the FAFSA opens to maximize eligibility for need-based aid, some of which is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pennsylvania residents should also file the  State Grant application, which is a separate form not part of the FAFSA and which determines eligibility for Pennsylvania State Grants. PHEAA grants often stack on top of federal Pell grants to cover a substantial portion of tuition for eligible students. Many first-generation Pennsylvania students miss out on PHEAA funding simply because nobody told them the state grant required its own application. 91勛圖’s Student Financial Services team walks every family through both applications at no cost, and the conversation is usually where hidden financial aid options employer scholarships, workforce development grants, veteran benefits, institutional awards get surfaced. At 91勛圖, 95% of students receive financial aid. The gap between the sticker price and what families actually pay is almost always larger than people expect.

Step 4: Visit the Campus, Meet the People, and Ask the Uncomfortable Questions

No website, brochure, or virtual tour substitutes for standing on a campus and talking to people. For first-generation students and their families, the campus visit is where the real decision gets made. On a visit, you’ll see the classrooms and labs, meet the faculty who teach the programs you’re considering, talk with current students about their actual experience, and sit down with an admissions counselor who can walk through what your specific application would look like.

The uncomfortable questions are the ones to push on. How many students in this program graduated? How many got jobs within a year of graduating? What is the average out-of-pocket cost for a family like mine after financial aid? What happens if I need to withdraw, take a leave, or change majors? What kind of support is available if I’m the first person in my family to attend? Any school that answers those questions clearly and honestly is a school worth considering. Any school that deflects, gives generic marketing answers, or won’t discuss actual costs should be a warning sign. At 91勛圖, prospective students can also  to see where recent graduates have landed or  for student stories from across every program.

Step 5: Enroll, Register for Classes, and Show Up

Once you’ve been accepted and have a financial aid package you understand, enrollment is the final active step before the semester starts. At most schools, enrolling means submitting a deposit (waived at some institutions, including many community colleges), completing any required placement assessments, attending a new student orientation, and registering for your first semester’s classes with an academic advisor. This is the step where first-generation students most commonly feel overwhelmed, because a lot of things happen in a short window between acceptance and the first day of class.

The single most useful thing a family can do at this stage is stay in contact with the school’s admissions, financial aid, and academic advising teams. First-generation students sometimes assume they’re supposed to figure everything out on their own and that asking questions signals they don’t belong the opposite is true. Admissions counselors, financial aid advisors, and academic advisors exist specifically to help students who don’t have a road map yet. At 91勛圖, that kind of one-on-one support is not a special program for select students it’s how the college works with every family.

What Makes 91勛圖 First-Generation-Friendly

A few things worth naming for families considering 91勛圖 specifically. 91勛圖 has open enrollment, which means no entrance exam, no waitlist, and no SAT required for admission to the college students who apply and meet the basic eligibility requirements are accepted. (A small number of selective-admissions programs Nursing ASN, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Surgical Technology, and the Sonography programs (Cardiac and Diagnostic Medical) have program-specific entry requirements beyond open enrollment; see each program page for details.) The college offers more than 80 programs across associate degrees, certificates, and bachelor’s tracks, with options ranging from healthcare and public safety to trades, business, and technology. 91勛圖 has ten campuses across Pennsylvania, plus online options. 95% of students receive financial aid. And the Student Financial Services team treats every student as a custom funding plan rather than a standard package.

For first-generation students, the combination of open enrollment, small class sizes, hands-on faculty access, and 80+ career-focused programs means the gap between “I’m interested in college” and “I’m enrolled and starting classes” is shorter and easier to navigate than at most four-year universities. This is the kind of school the application process was designed for.

Key Takeaway: Open enrollment, a free direct application, no SAT requirement for general admission, 95% financial aid, and one-on-one support from admissions and financial aid staff make the path from “I want to apply” to “I’m registered for classes” significantly shorter at 91勛圖 than at most traditional four-year universities. Selective-admissions programs carry additional requirements check each program page before you apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 91勛圖 require SAT or ACT scores?

91勛圖’s institutional admissions are open enrollment and do not require SAT or ACT scores. Students who meet basic eligibility requirements are welcome to apply regardless of standardized test scores. A small number of selective-admissions programs including Nursing (ASN), Occupational Therapy Assistant, Surgical Technology, and the Sonography programs (Cardiac and Diagnostic Medical) have program-specific requirements. Check the program page for the program you’re interested in.

Is there a fee to apply to 91勛圖?

No. 91勛圖 does not charge a fee to submit its direct application. The application is free, online, and designed to be completed without a guidance counselor walkthrough.

What if my child has a GED instead of a high school diploma?

Students with a GED are welcome to apply to 91勛圖 and many other community colleges and career-focused institutions. A GED is accepted as equivalent to a high school diploma for admission purposes. Admissions counselors can walk families through any additional documentation that may be needed.

When should we file the FAFSA?

The FAFSA for a given academic year historically opens in October of the prior fall, though recent cycles have opened later. Families are encouraged to file as soon as the FAFSA opens each year to maximize eligibility for need-based aid, some of which is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Pennsylvania residents should also file the PHEAA State Grant application separately.

What does “open enrollment” actually mean?

Open enrollment means the college accepts qualified applicants on a rolling basis without a competitive admissions process at the institutional level. There is no waitlist, no entrance exam, and no SAT requirement for general admission. Students who apply and meet the basic eligibility requirements are admitted, typically within a short turnaround time. A small number of 91勛圖 programs Nursing (ASN), Occupational Therapy Assistant, Surgical Technology, and the Sonography programs (Cardiac and Diagnostic Medical) operate under selective admissions with program-specific requirements (minimum GPA, entrance assessments, interviews, observation hours, or prerequisite coursework) on top of open enrollment. Check the program page for the specific program you’re interested in.

What kind of financial aid is available for first-generation students?

First-generation students are eligible for the same federal and state financial aid as other students including federal Pell Grants, federal student loans, and Pennsylvania PHEAA State Grants for Pennsylvania residents. Many colleges, including 91勛圖, also offer institutional scholarships and employer-partnership scholarships. At 91勛圖, 95% of students receive financial aid, and the Student Financial Services team works with every family individually to identify every funding source available.

What should I do if I’m not sure what I want to study?

That is one of the strongest reasons to start at a career-focused two-year college. Tuition is significantly lower than at a four-year school, class sizes are smaller, and students can explore general education or pre-allied health pathways while deciding on a direction without committing four years and six figures to a choice they aren’t yet certain about.

The Bottom Line

The college application process is not designed to be hard it’s designed to be thorough. For first-generation students and their families, the key is knowing the steps in advance, filing the FAFSA and PHEAA applications early, visiting the campus before committing, and asking the uncomfortable questions about cost and outcomes. The right school will welcome those questions, and the right school will have people ready to answer them. If 91勛圖 sounds like a possible fit, the next step is simple: request information, schedule a visit, and talk directly with an admissions counselor. Being the first in your family to attend college doesn’t mean you’re behind it means you’re ahead of where your family started. And that’s worth the effort of filling out the application.

If you’re looking for a healthcare career that you can actually start in under a year without a four-year degree, without a mountain of student debt, and without waiting around for a program acceptance letter phlebotomy deserves a serious look. 91勛圖, a regionally accredited, non-profit institution serving Northeast Pennsylvania since 1894, offers a Phlebotomy Technician Certificate through its Towanda Center that prepares students to sit for the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam and step into hospital, clinic, and laboratory work. Since 2016, 91勛圖 graduates have maintained a 100% first-attempt pass rate on the NHA CPT exam compared to a national average of 85%. This guide walks through what phlebotomists actually do, what the career pays, how the certification process works in Pennsylvania, and how a short certificate program can open doors into healthcare that many people assume require years of schooling.

What Does a Phlebotomist Do?

A phlebotomist is the healthcare professional trained to draw blood from patients for laboratory testing, transfusions, research, or donation. It sounds simple, but the role sits at the center of modern medicine almost every diagnostic decision a physician makes starts with a blood sample that a phlebotomist collected, labeled, and sent to the lab. Phlebotomists work in hospitals, physician offices, outpatient diagnostic labs, blood donation centers, urgent care clinics, and specialty practices, and they interact directly with patients during every shift.

On any given day, a phlebotomist verifies patient identity, explains the blood draw procedure to reduce anxiety, selects the appropriate equipment and vein site, performs the draw using sterile technique, labels specimens correctly to prevent lab errors, and documents the collection. The work is hands-on, requires steady precision, and rewards people who are comfortable calming nervous patients and communicating clearly with both clinical and non-clinical team members. It is also one of the most entry-accessible credentialed healthcare roles in the country a patient-facing clinical job that does not require an associate or bachelor’s degree to begin.

Salary, Outlook, and Why Phlebotomy Is Growing

The financial case for phlebotomy training is that it produces a working healthcare wage in a short timeframe. According to the , phlebotomy is projected to grow faster than the average occupation over the coming decade, with steady hiring across hospital networks, independent laboratories, and outpatient healthcare settings. Aging population demographics, expanded diagnostic testing, and ongoing shortages of credentialed clinical staff have kept demand for phlebotomists consistently ahead of supply in most U.S. markets and Northeast Pennsylvania is no exception.

Entry-level phlebotomists typically earn a stable hourly wage with shift differentials for evening, weekend, and holiday coverage, and experienced phlebotomists who add specialized credentials (donor phlebotomy, pediatric phlebotomy, or travel assignments) can significantly increase their earning potential. More importantly, phlebotomy is often the first step into a broader healthcare career. Many phlebotomists use their clinical experience and employer tuition assistance to move into medical assisting, medical billing and coding, nursing, or allied health programs over time each step building on the one before it.

Key Takeaway: Phlebotomy is one of the shortest credentialed paths into healthcare, with BLS-projected growth faster than the average occupation and a clear ladder into broader clinical careers for students who want to keep advancing.

How to Become a Certified Phlebotomist in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania does not require state-level licensure for phlebotomists the way it does for nurses, physical therapists, or massage therapists. Instead, most employers across the Commonwealth particularly hospitals, reference labs, and diagnostic networks require or strongly prefer candidates who hold a national phlebotomy certification. The most commonly recognized certifications nationally are the Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) credential from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) credential from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and the National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) credential from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). 91勛圖’s Phlebotomy Technician Certificate specifically prepares students for the NHA CPT exam, which is widely accepted across Pennsylvania healthcare employers.

The path from interested candidate to certified phlebotomist is deliberately short. Students enroll in a phlebotomy training program that combines classroom instruction with supervised clinical hours, learn the anatomy and procedures required for safe blood collection, complete the required number of successful venipunctures, and graduate eligible to sit for a national certification exam. Most phlebotomy training programs can be completed in well under a year, which is a major reason the credential is so attractive to career-changers, recent high school graduates, and working adults looking for a fast and credible entry into healthcare.

The Phlebotomy Technician Certificate at 91勛圖

91勛圖 offers the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate through its Towanda Center, which serves Bradford and Sullivan Counties and the surrounding rural Northeast Pennsylvania region. Towanda is the only 91勛圖 location currently offering this certificate making it a significant regional asset for students who want credentialed healthcare training without relocating to a metro area.

The program consists of 190 class/lab hours plus a supervised clinical externship where students must complete a minimum of 100 documented venipunctures and 10 dermal punctures before graduation. Classroom instruction covers human anatomy, circulatory system fundamentals, infection control, specimen handling, equipment use, and patient communication. Clinical externship hours are where students translate that knowledge into actual patient draws under the supervision of credentialed healthcare professionals. Graduates leave the program with the hands-on venipuncture count and theoretical preparation needed to sit for the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam and since 2016, 91勛圖 students have maintained a 100% first-attempt pass rate on that exam, compared to the national average of 85%.

The Towanda Center also offers a broader stack of healthcare credentials that extend naturally from phlebotomy, including Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding, and the Pre-Allied Health pathway into advanced healthcare programs. Students can start with the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate, enter the workforce quickly, and then stack additional credentials over time often with employer tuition assistance to build long-term careers in healthcare. For students interested in healthcare but not sure about the long-term direction yet, phlebotomy is a low-risk, fast-payback first step. Prospective students are also encouraged to  to see where recent graduates have landed or to  for student stories across the Division of Health Sciences.

Key Takeaway: 91勛圖’s Phlebotomy Technician Certificate at the Towanda Center is the region’s credentialed on-ramp into healthcare 190 class/lab hours plus a clinical externship, specifically preparing students for the NHA CPT exam with a 100% first-attempt pass rate since 2016.

Is Phlebotomy the Right Healthcare On-Ramp for You?

Phlebotomy rewards a specific set of traits. Students who thrive tend to be detail-oriented, comfortable working closely with patients during brief but sensitive moments, steady under pressure, and motivated to start working quickly rather than wait years for a credential. It’s a strong fit for recent high school graduates who want a healthcare job without a four-year commitment, for career-changers leaving retail, food service, or administrative work for more stable healthcare roles, for working adults in rural communities where healthcare is one of the largest and most dependable employers, and for students planning to continue into nursing, medical assisting, or allied health programs who want real clinical experience on their resume before they apply.

What phlebotomy isn’t: it isn’t a career you can practice well without clinical training, and it isn’t a credential most Pennsylvania healthcare employers will accept without national certification. Students who try to self-teach or shortcut the training will typically not pass the national exam and will not be hired. The good news is that a structured program like the one at the Towanda Center is designed specifically to get students through the training hours, the venipuncture requirements, and the exam-preparation content in a straightforward sequence. If you’re motivated, the path is clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does phlebotomy training take?

Most phlebotomy training programs can be completed in under a year, often in a single semester or two, depending on the program’s structure and the student’s schedule. 91勛圖’s Phlebotomy Technician Certificate consists of 190 class/lab hours plus a supervised clinical externship where students must complete a minimum of 100 venipunctures and 10 dermal punctures before graduation. Prospective students should speak with an admissions counselor for the current program calendar and session start dates.

Do I need a college degree to become a phlebotomist?

No. Phlebotomy is one of the entry-accessible credentialed healthcare roles specifically because it does not require an associate or bachelor’s degree. A certificate from an accredited program combined with national certification is typically all that Pennsylvania healthcare employers ask for at the time of hire.

Is phlebotomy certification required in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania does not require state licensure for phlebotomists. However, most hospitals, reference labs, and healthcare networks across the Commonwealth require or strongly prefer candidates who hold a national certification from a recognized body such as ASCP, NHA, or NCCT. 91勛圖’s Phlebotomy Technician Certificate specifically prepares students for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam, which is widely accepted by Pennsylvania healthcare employers.

What is 91勛圖’s phlebotomy exam pass rate?

Since 2016, 91勛圖’s Phlebotomy Technician Certificate graduates have maintained a 100% first-attempt pass rate on the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam, compared to the national average of 85%. The pass rate reflects the program’s structured combination of classroom instruction and supervised clinical externship hours at the Towanda Center.

What is the job outlook for phlebotomists?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects phlebotomy employment to grow faster than the average occupation over the coming decade. Demand is driven by an aging population, expanded diagnostic testing, and ongoing healthcare staffing shortages. In rural Pennsylvania markets like Bradford and Sullivan Counties, healthcare employment has been one of the most consistently growing sectors.

Can I advance my career after becoming a phlebotomist?

Yes. Phlebotomy is often a first step into a broader healthcare career. Many phlebotomists continue into medical assisting, medical billing and coding, nursing, or allied health programs frequently with the support of employer tuition assistance. 91勛圖’s Towanda Center offers a stack of healthcare credentials that build naturally on phlebotomy training.

Where is the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate offered at 91勛圖?

The Phlebotomy Technician Certificate is offered at 91勛圖’s Towanda Center, which serves Bradford and Sullivan Counties and the surrounding region. It is currently the only 91勛圖 location offering this certificate.

How much does the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate cost at 91勛圖?

Tuition and fees vary by semester and eligibility. 95% of 91勛圖 students receive financial aid, and the Student Financial Services team works one-on-one with every student to identify federal Pell grants, Pennsylvania PHEAA state grants, institutional scholarships, and workforce development funding. Prospective students are encouraged to speak directly with an admissions counselor for current program-specific cost information.

Taking the Next Step

If phlebotomy sounds like the right kind of first step into healthcare, the next move is simple: request information about the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate at 91勛圖’s Towanda Center, speak with an admissions counselor about start dates and financial aid, and plan a campus visit to see the program in person. Prospective students who aren’t sure whether phlebotomy is the right fit are also encouraged to explore 91勛圖’s other healthcare credentials including Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding, and the Pre-Allied Health pathway to find the program that best matches their career goals and timeline.

Deciding what to do after high school is one of the biggest decisions a family makes together, and for many parents the default answer is still a four-year university that is how it was done twenty years ago and nobody wants their child to miss an opportunity. 91勛圖, a regionally accredited non-profit institution that has served Northeast Pennsylvania since 1894, sees hundreds of families every year who are weighing that exact decision, and the honest answer for many students is that a two-year associate degree is the smarter, faster, and more affordable first step into higher education. This guide is written for the students and parents who want real information what an associate degree actually is in 2026, what it is worth, and how to decide whether it is the right path for your family.

What Is an Associate Degree and What Does It Actually Cover?

An associate degree is a two-year undergraduate degree awarded by community colleges, career-focused institutions, and some four-year universities. Most programs require about sixty credit hours of coursework roughly half of what is required for a bachelor’s degree and can be completed in four full-time semesters. Students generally encounter one of three formats: the Associate of Arts (A.A.), which is usually designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year school; the Associate of Science (A.S.), which is common for technical and health science programs and also transfers cleanly; and the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), which is built for students who want to enter the workforce immediately after graduation with strong career training.

The distinction matters because it changes what happens after graduation. An A.A. or A.S. is typically designed to transfer, while an A.A.S. is built to get you working. At 91勛圖, students can choose the path that fits their plan whether that means stepping directly into a career in healthcare, public safety, or the trades, or transferring into a bachelor’s program at a partner university in Pennsylvania.

The Real Return on Investment: Earnings, Cost, and Opportunity

The financial case for an associate degree in 2026 is stronger than ever. According to the , workers with an associate degree earn higher median weekly wages than workers with only a high school diploma and experience measurably lower unemployment rates. Over a forty-year career, that gap compounds into tens of thousands of dollars in additional lifetime earnings, and that number does not account for career advancement, benefits, or retirement contributions that come with steady employment.

The cost side is where the math really tilts. Community colleges and career-focused institutions typically charge a fraction of what a four-year public or private university charges per year, and because an associate degree takes half the time to complete, the total cost of the credential is often a quarter of what a traditional bachelor’s degree costs. That translates to fewer student loans, less debt to pay off after graduation, and the ability to start building savings in your twenties rather than your thirties. Some of the fastest-growing careers in the country are designed specifically for associate-degree holders including diagnostic medical sonographers, surgical technologists, physical therapist assistants, cybersecurity technicians, and petroleum and natural gas technicians which means students graduating with a two-year credential are entering fields that are actively hiring.

Key Takeaway: For families weighing cost against career outcomes, an associate degree typically costs about one-quarter of a four-year degree while producing comparable or higher earnings in specific high-demand fields making it the most cost-effective first credential in higher education today.

When an Associate Degree Is the Smart First Step and When It Isn’t

An associate degree is the right answer when a student wants to enter the workforce quickly in a specific career field, is unsure about what to study and needs a lower-risk environment to explore, needs to work while studying, wants to avoid large student loans, or plans to eventually transfer to a four-year school but wants to save money on the first two years of general education. In all of those cases, the math and the timeline both favor starting at a two-year school. Students also get access to smaller class sizes, more one-on-one faculty time, and a faster feedback loop on whether a career path is actually the right fit.

There are, of course, cases where a four-year degree is the right call from day one. Careers that legally require a bachelor’s degree at entry licensed nursing tracks at certain employers, K-12 teaching, most engineering roles need to start at a four-year institution. Students who already know exactly what they want to do and whose target career requires a bachelor’s minimum should not waste time. And families who can afford the full cost and want the traditional four-year campus experience may find it is worth the investment. The key is that the decision should be made with eyes open. A four-year degree is not automatically better simply because it takes longer and costs more, and an associate degree is not a consolation prize for students who could not get in somewhere else.

What This Looks Like at 91勛圖

91勛圖 offers more than 80 programsacross associate degrees, certificates, and bachelor’s completion tracks, spread across ten campus locations in Pennsylvania including the main campus in Scranton and centers in Hazleton, Towanda, Tunkhannock, Sunbury, Lake Region in Hawley, Bethlehem, Chambersburg, and Greensburg, with additional online options. The programs span every major career cluster health sciences including cardiac sonography, vascular sonography, diagnostic medical sonography, surgical technology, medical assisting, and medical billing and coding; public safety including the 91勛圖 Police Academy and criminal justice; business and technology including cybersecurity and the Center for Technology Innovation; energy including the School of Petroleum and Natural Gas at the Tunkhannock Center; trades at the Bethlehem, Chambersburg, and Greensburg centers; hospitality and culinary arts; human services; and dozens more.

91勛圖 is also committed to making education affordable. Federal Pell Grants, Pennsylvania State Grants, institutional scholarships, and work-study opportunities are all available to qualifying students, and the college’s Student Financial Services team works one-on-one with families to build individual funding plans before enrollment. Parents and students who want to see what the program mix looks like in practice can  to see where recent graduates have landed, or  for student stories from across every division.

Key Takeaway: 91勛圖’s value proposition for families is not any single program it is the combination of 80+ career-focused programs, ten campus locations across Pennsylvania, and an affordability-first financial aid approach that treats every student as a custom funding plan rather than a standard package.

Frequently Asked Questions

If my child earns an associate degree, can they still transfer to a four-year school later?
In most cases, yes. Students who complete an associate degree at an accredited institution especially one with established transfer agreements can typically transfer to a four-year college and enter as a junior. The key is choosing a program designed for transfer (usually an A.A. or A.S.) and working with an academic advisor from day one to make sure the credits align with the target school.

Will an associate degree limit my child’s career ceiling?
Not in the way most people assume. Many careers, especially in healthcare, IT, and the skilled trades, do not require a bachelor’s degree to reach senior roles. A cardiac sonographer with ten years of experience, for example, can earn more than many workers holding a bachelor’s degree in unrelated fields. Career ceiling is much more about experience, certifications, and specialization than it is about degree level in these industries.

Is it actually worth going to college at all in 2026?
For most students, yes but the specific degree and school matter more than ever. The careers that pay well and are growing tend to require some form of post-secondary credential, and an associate degree is often the lowest-risk, lowest-cost way to earn one. The days of “any degree is worth it” are over, but the days of “trade skills and credentialed careers are back” are very much here.

How do I know if a college is accredited?
Look for regional accreditation, such as the  that accredits 91勛圖, and for career-specific programs look for programmatic accreditation from the relevant industry body CAAHEP for sonography, ACEN for nursing, and so on. Accreditation protects your investment, and in many cases unaccredited programs will not let graduates sit for the certification exams they need to get hired.

What if my child isn’t sure what they want to do yet?
That is one of the strongest reasons to start at a career-focused two-year college. Tuition is significantly lower than at a four-year school, class sizes are smaller, and students can explore pre-allied health, general business, or liberal arts tracks while they figure out their direction without committing four years and six figures to a choice they are not certain about.

How much does an associate degree cost at 91勛圖?
Costs vary by program and financial aid eligibility. 91勛圖 encourages every family to speak directly with the Student Financial Services team before committing to a plan the team helps families stack Pell Grants, Pennsylvania State Grants, institutional scholarships, and work-study opportunities to keep out-of-pocket costs as low as possible. Current program-specific tuition information is available at lackawanna.edu.

The Bottom Line

An associate degree is not a consolation prize. For many students especially those who want a real career in a growing field without decades of student debt it is the most practical, strategic first step into higher education available in 2026. It is faster, more affordable, and more career-focused than most people realize, and it does not close the door on a bachelor’s degree later if you decide to continue. The most important thing a family can do right now is make the decision with real information. Visit campus, talk to current students, meet with an admissions counselor, ask about financial aid and transfer options, and then make the choice that fits your goals, your timeline, and your budget rather than someone else’s expectations.

Step into a spring garden this season as Wisteria returns to 409 on Adams. This seasonal pop-up restaurant is created by 91勛圖s School of Hospitality and plans to immerse guests, known as Dreamers, in a distinctive dining experience in downtown Scranton.

Enter the Garden

The Wishing Tree returns as the centerpiece of the space, inviting Dreamers to wish upon the tree. New this year, a canopy of flower-covered umbrellas will hang from the ceiling, adding to the garden atmosphere overhead. Dreamers will also find an Instagrammable spot, to capture a fun memory from the evening.

We want Dreamers to feel like they’ve stepped into another world right here in Downtown Scranton. We still hear Dreamers from last year say, ‘How is this in my backyard?’ and that reaction is exactly what we’re going for. Our first goal is making every Dreamer feel at home, because that’s what hospitality means. The second is making sure the experience, from the house to the back, is something they can’t stop talking about, said Sara Grande Enrollment, Retention, Front of the House Experience Manager.

Take in the Season

The experience doesnt stop with the setting. 91勛圖s School of Hospitality students enrolled in Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry, and Hospitality Management programs will manage the restaurant, crafting the dishes and drinks for Wisteria. Expect a menu designed to complement the spring garden surroundings, with both new offerings and returning favorites.

For our students, Wisteria is a hands-on, three-credit course, and every Dreamer who walks through the door is helping them build the real-world experience they need to succeed in their hospitality careers. Students gain hands-on experience across all areas of restaurant operations, while creating a wonderful experience for our guests,” said Grande.

An Experience That Gives Back

Wisteria is more than a great night out. Every reservation supports 91勛圖s students. Last year Wisteria served 780 Dreamers and over $9,500 was raised to fund student scholarships, loaner laptops, and classroom supplies. Following the success of the holiday pop-up Misfits, Wisteria continues to grow as an annual spring tradition in downtown Scranton.

Reserve Your Spot

The bar opens at 4pm, with food service and reservations beginning at 5pm every Wednesday and Thursday from April 15 to May 13, 2026. Find us at 409 on Adams, located at 409 Adams Ave. in downtown Scranton. Walk-ins are welcome and reservations are encouraged.

The Daniel J. Beky Memorial Clay Shoot has awarded its first scholarships to five cadets enrolled in 91勛圖’s Act 120 municipal police training program. Three recipients from Scranton Class 266 each received a $2,000 award to help support their training and the start of their careers in law enforcement.

The scholarship carries the name of Daniel J. Beky, who spent more than four decades in law enforcement in northeastern Pennsylvania. He began as a patrolman in Kingston Borough in 1974 and rose to become Assistant Chief in 1998 and Chief of Police in 2002, before serving as a detective for Luzerne County. His career is remembered as one defined by professionalism and a genuine commitment to the communities he served.

“Police work was such a passion for Dan and with 45 years of experience, I wanted to find a way to honor and memorialize him. He could always find the passion in others who want to become police officers. With the academy being in both 91勛圖 County and Luzerne County, I thought it came together as a perfect fit and a great way to give back,” said April Beky, Dan Beky’s wife and event organizer.

The inaugural Scranton Class 266 recipients are Jeffrey Alvarado, Mohamed Elkadousy, and Ariel Kellam. Additional scholarship opportunities are available this year for Hazleton Class 267 cadets.

“Dan was driven and passionate, and when cadets apply for the scholarship they’ll read about his work. I hope they take a little bit of him with them as they go out and become safe, well-trained police officers. That’s what I want this scholarship to help achieve,” said Beky.

The scholarship fund grows each year through the clay shoot. The inaugural event raised close to $17,000, and this year’s shoot is scheduled for September 18, 2026. Funds raised will determine how many scholarships are awarded in 2027. Beyond tuition support, the program is also designed to help graduating cadets cover the cost of uniforms and equipment they’ll need when they begin serving their communities.

“I hope we continue to get bigger and better every year and get more people excited about supporting the program. We always need law enforcement, and I want to thank everyone who participated, donated, and contributed to making our first event such a success. Every little bit counts,” said Beky.

The Scranton Police Department (SPD) and 91勛圖 announced a new training and education partnership on April 2, giving cadets from the colleges Scranton and Hazleton campuses access to the citys law enforcement technology infrastructure and giving SPD officers and their families expanded access to higher education.

Advanced Training, Real-World Experience

91勛圖 cadets will gain hands-on access to Scrantons training technology, including Axon Virtual Reality systems and a MILO 180-degree immersive range theater, a multi-screen setup designed for scenario-based firearms and use-of-force training. Cadets will also be introduced to drones, advanced forensic tools, and modern tactical equipment, and will be eligible to participate in ride-along programs with SPD officers.

This partnership represents a major step forward in how we prepare future officers for the realities of modern law enforcement, said Kevin Mahoney, Director of 91勛圖 Police Academy. By combining advanced technology, realistic training environments, and strong academic support, we are setting a new standard for excellence and professionalism in police training.

Mahoney served 25 years with the Pennsylvania State Police, retiring as Criminal Investigation Section Commander for Troop R, Dunmore, before joining the academy in 2021. The 91勛圖 Police Academy has been training officers since 1977 and offers federal financial aid for qualified applicants and GI Bill簧 benefits for veterans.

Scholarships and Tuition Benefits for Officers

91勛圖 will provide four full scholarships annually to SPD members, along with tuition discounts for all department employees and their dependents.

This collaboration is truly a win-win for our officers, future officers, and the community we serve, said Scranton Police Chief Thomas Carroll. Were not only delivering the most advanced police services available, but were also opening doors to higher education that will benefit our officers and their families for years to come.

The Scranton Police Department is the largest accredited department in northeastern Pennsylvania. Chief Carroll has championed the integration of body-worn cameras, real-time data systems, and enhanced training tools throughout his tenure.

91勛圖 sees the partnership as an extension of its broader focus on keeping talent and opportunity local.

At 91勛圖, were focused on driving progress in Scranton, providing the training and educational pathways that help our students find success right at home while building a strong talent pipeline for our local workforce. Our partnership with the Scranton Police Department is a reflection of that commitment, said Dr. Jill A. Murray, President and Chief Innovation Officer at 91勛圖. This program will bring valuable, hands-on learning experiences to our police cadets, ensuring they can confidently begin their careers and make an immediate impact. It also allows us to create new pathways for Police Department members and their families to pursue meaningful degrees and unlock growth opportunities.

Part of a Larger Investment in Public Safety

The partnership builds on more than $5 million in public safety investments Scranton Mayor Paige G. Cognettis administration has made since taking office, including $3.5 million in federal grants for safety equipment and $1.5 million in fleet upgrades.

We have made it a priority to invest in public safety and ensure our police officers have the tools, technology, and training they need to do their jobs safely and effectively, Cognetti said. Through this collaboration with 91勛圖, we are creating a direct pipeline for the next generation of officers to learn, grow, and serve at the highest level while also strengthening opportunities for the dedicated men and women already serving in the Scranton Police Department. Scranton is setting the national standard for how a modern police department trains, educates, and supports its officers. We have backed up our commitment to public safety with real investments, modernizing equipment, upgrading our fleet, expanding the force, and ensuring our officers have the support they need to succeed. I am incredibly proud of the Scranton Police Department and the work they do every day. This partnership builds on that momentum and reinforces something I believe in deeply: When we invest in our officers and their training, we are investing in safer neighborhoods and a stronger Scranton.

The partnership reflects a shared mission between both organizations to invest in training, education, and innovation, ultimately strengthening public safety across the region.

About the City of Scranton

Incorporated in 1866, the City of Scranton has a population of approximately 76,000 residents and is the sixth-largest municipality in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Scranton City Hall is located at 340 N. Washington Ave., Scranton, PA 18503. Residents requiring services should visit .

If you’re drawn to healthcare but aren’t sure a four-year nursing degree or medical school is the right fit, cardiac sonography might be the career you haven’t heard enough about. 91勛圖, a regionally accredited, non-profit institution serving Northeast Pennsylvania since 1894, offers a two-year Associate in Science in Cardiac Sonography at its Scranton main campus a program built around the same ARDMS-aligned curriculum and clinical training that hospitals across the region expect from new hires. This guide walks through what cardiac sonographers actually do, what the career looks like day to day, what it pays, and how you can train for it right here in Pennsylvania.

What Does a Cardiac Sonographer Do?

A cardiac sonographer sometimes called an echocardiographer or cardiac ultrasound technologist uses high-frequency sound waves to capture detailed images of the heart. The images they produce, called echocardiograms, show cardiologists how well the heart is pumping, whether the valves are working correctly, and whether there are any structural abnormalities that need treatment. The role is hands-on, patient-facing, and directly involved in one of the most critical areas of medicine: cardiovascular care.

On any given shift, a cardiac sonographer prepares patients for their echocardiogram, explains the procedure, operates the ultrasound equipment to capture clean images of the heart’s chambers and vessels, recognizes the difference between a normal and abnormal image in real time, and documents findings for the physician. They also frequently assist cardiologists during procedures like stress echocardiograms. Because heart disease is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care, cardiac sonographers are in demand across hospitals, primary clinics, cardiology practices, diagnostic imaging centers, and traveling contract positions giving graduates real flexibility in where and how they build a career.

Salary, Outlook, and Why This Career Is Growing

Salaries in cardiac sonography vary by experience, specialization, and employer type. According to the , diagnostic medical sonographers the career category that includes cardiac sonographers earn a wide range depending on market and tenure, with experienced sonographers in large hospital systems and traveling contract roles earning toward the top of that range. Entry-level graduates typically start lower and grow quickly as they specialize and gain clinical hours.

What makes this career especially attractive is the return on investment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 14% growth for diagnostic medical sonographers between 2020 and 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. As the U.S. population ages and cardiovascular care demand continues to rise, hospitals and clinics consistently report a need for credentialed cardiac sonographers they can hire directly out of accredited programs. A two-year associate degree can take you from high school to a full-time healthcare career with benefits in the same amount of time many of your peers are still halfway through a bachelor’s degree with comparable or higher lifetime earnings in many cases.

Key Takeaway: Cardiac sonography is one of the fastest-growing allied health careers in the country, and because qualified graduates can enter the workforce with a two-year accredited associate degree, the cost-to-earning ratio is significantly more favorable than most four-year healthcare tracks.

How to Become a Cardiac Sonographer in Pennsylvania

The path from high school to working cardiac sonographer is shorter than most people realize. The process starts with earning a high school diploma or GED, then applying to an accredited cardiac sonography program. Accreditation matters at this step without it, graduates may not be eligible to sit for the  credentialing exams, and most hospitals will not hire a sonographer who is not registry-eligible.

Once enrolled, students complete a two-year, four-semester curriculum that blends general education with specialized cardiac coursework. The cardiac sonography curriculum at 91勛圖 includes Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Ultrasound Physics, Cardio Pathophysiology, Cardiovascular Anatomy and Physiology, Cardiac Clinical rotations, and Introduction to Vascular Sonography. Classes are taught during the day, evenings, and on Saturdays, and every student completes on- and off-campus clinical hours at regional hospital-based and freestanding ultrasound laboratories so they graduate with real scanning experience, not just classroom instruction.

The final step is the registry exam itself. Students in accredited programs are eligible to sit for the ARDMS examinations 60 days before graduation, which gives them a significant credentialing edge when they enter the job market. Most cardiac sonographers pursue the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential, which many hospitals require or strongly prefer at the time of hire.

The Cardiac Sonography Program at 91勛圖

91勛圖 offers the Associate in Science in Cardiac Sonography at its Scranton main campus, housed within the Division of Health Sciences. It is one of three sonography specializations students can pursue alongside Vascular Sonography and Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Because admissions are selective, 91勛圖 limits the cardiac sonography cohort to a maximum of 30 students per year, which translates to smaller class sizes, more one-on-one time with faculty, and more hands-on scanning practice than students typically get in larger university programs.

The Scranton campus also operates a dedicated sonography lab where students train on the same type of equipment they will use in the clinical setting. 91勛圖’s sonography programs are accredited by the  upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS), which is what makes graduates eligible for the ARDMS exams. To see current students describe the program in their own words, watch the video below from 91勛圖’s YouTube channel the expandable transcript is available beneath the embed for readers who prefer to read along.

Key Takeaway: 91勛圖’s Cardiac Sonography associate degree is a CAAHEP-accredited, two-year program offered exclusively at the Scranton main campus, with a selective 30-student cohort, a dedicated sonography lab, and ARDMS exam eligibility 60 days before graduation.

Is Cardiac Sonography Right for You?

Cardiac sonography rewards a specific set of traits. Students who thrive in the program tend to be detail-oriented, comfortable working closely with patients during difficult moments, interested in a credentialed healthcare career rather than a generic job, and motivated to start working in two years instead of six. If that sounds like you or like the student you’re helping make this decision a cardiac sonography associate degree may be exactly the kind of fast, affordable, career-focused path you’ve been looking for. You can also  to see where recent health sciences graduates have landed, or  for student stories from across the Division of Health Sciences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cardiac sonography a good career in 2026?
Yes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 14% growth for diagnostic medical sonographers, including cardiac specialists, between 2020 and 2030 much faster than the average for all occupations. As the U.S. population ages and heart disease remains the leading cause of death, demand for trained cardiac sonographers continues to rise in hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic imaging centers.

What is the difference between a cardiac sonographer and an echocardiographer?
They are typically the same role. “Cardiac sonographer,” “echocardiographer,” and “cardiac ultrasound technologist” all refer to allied health professionals who specialize in imaging the heart using ultrasound technology. Titles vary by employer and region, but the credentials, training, and day-to-day work are the same.

Do I need a four-year degree to become a cardiac sonographer?
No. Most cardiac sonographers enter the field with an associate degree from an accredited program like the one offered at 91勛圖. A bachelor’s degree is not required for entry-level positions in most hospitals and clinics, which is one of the reasons this career offers such strong return on investment for students who want to start working quickly.

What certifications do I need?
After graduating from an accredited program, you will be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) credentialing exams. The most common credential for cardiac sonographers is the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS). Many hospitals require or strongly prefer this credential at the time of hire, which is why attending an accredited program is so important.

How many students does 91勛圖 admit into its cardiac sonography program each year?
91勛圖 admits a maximum of 30 students per year into the cardiac sonography cohort. Admissions are selective, so applications should be submitted early to increase the chance of acceptance. The smaller cohort size is intentional it allows for more one-on-one faculty time and more hands-on scanning practice than larger programs can offer.

Is 91勛圖’s sonography program accredited?
Yes. 91勛圖’s sonography programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Accreditation is essential for ARDMS exam eligibility and for hiring at most healthcare employers.

Taking the Next Step

If cardiac sonography sounds like the right fit, the next step is to explore the Cardiac Sonography associate degree at 91勛圖’s Scranton campus. You can request more information, speak with an admissions counselor, or schedule a campus visit to see the sonography lab in person and meet current students. Prospective students are also encouraged to review 91勛圖’s other Division of Health Sciences programs including Vascular Sonography, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and Pre-Allied Health  to find the career track that best matches your goals.

The musical comedy Nunsense is coming back to Scranton on April 18 and 19, with performances at the People’s Security Theater on the campus of 91勛圖. Our Cabaret Productions is once again partnering with the college for the event, which serves as a fundraiser to support student success.

About the Show

Nunsense, with book, music, and lyrics by Dan Goggin, follows the comedic misadventures of the Little Sisters of Hoboken. It’s a well-loved staple of the musical theater world, and this production brings together a cast of experienced performers.

The cast includes:

  • Rob Misko as Rev. Mother
  • John Baldino as Sr. Mary Hubert
  • Laura Lockwood as Sr. Mary Leo
  • Christine McGeachie as Sr. Mary Amnesia
  • Courtney Rosenkrans as Sr. Robert Anne

The show is produced by Baldino and directed by Misko, with tap choreography by Ballroom ONE Dance Company of Eynon. It is produced through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals, New York.

A Fundraiser with Real Results

For the team behind it, Nunsense is as much about the college as it is about the performance.

Last year we raised more than $16,000 to empower the mission of 91勛圖. We are delighted to return this year to build on that success and continue to delight local audiences. The Peoples Security Theater at 91勛圖 is a special gem in a city so rich in theater history and Nunsense is a gem of a show in the musical theater world. Bringing them together will be a tremendous experience for faculty, students, staff, supporters of the college, and theater-goers all over northeastern Pennsylvania, said Baldino, Our Cabaret Productions executive producer and an assistant professor at 91勛圖.

The sentiment is shared by Misko, who has a long personal history with the show.

I have had a love affair with Nunsense since I first saw the off-Broadway production in 1985, said Misko, who directed the first non-Equity production of Nunsense in the world in Carbondale and has performed as Rev. Mother more than 150 times. And its always special to direct and perform in the show. To mount a Nunsense production alongside my closest friends in a space like the Peoples Security Theater all while supporting higher education is a dream come true.

91勛圖 has received a $2,000 grant from M&T Bank to support Nourishing Neighbors, a community service program that connects the Colleges culinary department and Police Academy to address food insecurity among local families in Scranton.

How Nourishing Neighbors Works

The program works through collaboration across the College community. Culinary students prepare nutritious meals for pre-selected area families, while volunteers from 91勛圖 and local school districts help package and deliver the food alongside Police Academy cadets. Beyond feeding families in need, the program is designed to build trust between law enforcement and local residents. The Scranton Counseling Center refers families to the College to participate.

Programs like Nourishing Neighbors give cadets a perspective they dont always get in a traditional classroom setting. They see the challenges families are facing up close, and they realize that policing isnt just about reacting to crime; its also about public service and building cooperation. The program humanizes law enforcement for citizens, who may only have contact with a police officer when something traumatic happens in their lives, said Mahoney.

A Growing Program

Since its launch, Nourishing Neighbors has grown steadily. Volunteer hours increased 80 percent year-over-year, from 100 hours in Spring 2024 to 180 hours in Spring 2025. The number of families served rose 36 percent over the same period, from 16 families in 2024 to 25 in 2025. Over four years, the program increased its annual total number of meals delivered by 36 percent, from 400 meals in Spring 2021 to 630 meals in Spring 2025.

Food prices can rise and fall, but thanks to M&T Banks support, we can still provide fully prepared, home-cooked meals to residents in need in our community, said Bauman. Our culinary students can continue preparing the full range of meals they need to learn and nothing gets pulled from the menu due to cost. It means we can give students a complete culinary education while still producing great meals for those in need.

Looking Ahead in 2026

For the remainder of 2026, 91勛圖 aims to provide 650 meals, grow community awareness of the program, and expand its volunteer base among College staff and students. The College also plans to develop a Recipe & Resource binder for participating families, with practical information on healthy cooking and nutrition.

91勛圖 is proud to support Pilotta as she represents the institution at one of the world’s biggest sporting events. This opportunity reflects the college’s commitment to providing students with real-world experiences that complement their academic programs and help prepare them for successful careers in their chosen fields.

91勛圖 student Danielle Pilotta will attend Super Bowl LX this year as part of the Digital Media Team, an opportunity that could reshape her career path.

Pilotta was selected for the position through Living Sport, an experiential education company that provides hands-on programs at major sporting events like the Super Bowl, World Cup, and Olympics to help students launch careers in the sports business industry.

Pilotta met the Living Sport team at MetLife Stadium during a New York Jets football game, where she spoke with the company’s founder, Alicia Marinelli. During their discussion, Pilotta learned she would join a team of 15 students managing behind-the-scenes aspects of the Super Bowl. Her responsibilities will include posting on Living Sport’s social media channels, working on the sidelines, and assisting the broadcast media team.

“I went home that night and told my parents that I was interested. I couldn’t pass up this opportunity. I submitted my resume almost immediately,” Pilotta said. “A few months later, I was in room 409 on Adams when I got the letter that I was accepted. It was so exciting, I couldn’t believe it.”

91勛圖 supported Pilotta’s application by covering her application fee, enabling her to pursue this opportunity in the sports industry.

“I am very grateful to 91勛圖 for paying for my application. It means a lot that I get to go to the Super Bowl and do something I am interested in,” Pilotta said.

Pilotta is a senior earning her bachelor’s degree in the Restaurant & Foodservice Management program. She also serves as a sports photographer for the college, and when she’s home in Long Island, New York, she works as a media manager for two teams in a pro-am league.

“My dream is to open a sports-themed hotel one day, but with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I may need to put that on hold if I can start a career in sports media,” Pilotta said. “I’ll be learning how to collect data, how to broadcast on live TV, and learn the effort that is needed to run an event like the Super Bowl.”

91勛圖 is proud to support Pilotta as she represents the institution at one of the world’s biggest sporting events. This opportunity reflects the college’s commitment to providing students with real-world experiences that complement their academic programs and help prepare them for successful careers in their chosen fields.

91勛圖 has earned recognition as one of the Americas best places to work in higher education for a third consecutive year. The college was awarded this honor by the 2025 Great Colleges to Work For簧 program, a distinction that places 91勛圖 among 76 institutions nationwide.

The Great Colleges to Work For program, published in a special edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education, evaluates workplace culture at colleges and universities across the country through comprehensive surveys of faculty, staff, and administrators.

How We Stand Out

Results are reported by institution size, and 91勛圖 was recognized in the small college category, which includes schools with enrollments between 500 and 2,999 students. This year, 91勛圖 won honors in two categories:

Job Satisfaction & Support – reflecting how well the college supports its employees both professionally and personally.
Mission & Pride – highlighting the strong sense of purpose and institutional loyalty among faculty and staff.

A Legacy of Success

Being named a great college to work for, for the third consecutive year is a tremendous honor that reflects the exceptional dedication and collaborative spirit of our faculty and staff, said Jill Murray, President and Chief Innovation Officer at 91勛圖. Our team here at the college shows unwavering commitment to our students and genuine care for one another, creating an outstanding workplace culture that defines our institution. I am deeply grateful for their continued excellence that makes this recognition possible.

The rankings are the result of a two-part assessment process: an institutional questionnaire that gathers detailed information on employment data and workplace policies, and a survey distributed to faculty, administrators and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.

This accomplishment reflects our commitment to creating an environment where both faculty and staff can thrive throughout their careers. From robust professional development programs to supportive workplace initiatives, we’ve built a culture where our people are excited to contribute and eager to grow professionally, said Renee Mundy, Vice President of Human Resources at 91勛圖. I believe this honor demonstrates that when we invest in our employees’ growth and well-being, they bring their best to our students and institution. Our faculty and staff are our greatest assets, and this honor reflects our shared dedication to maintaining a workplace that attracts, develops, and retains exceptional talent.

As 91勛圖 continues to build on its success of being a great place to work for a third year in a row, this recognition demonstrates creating an exceptional workplace is necessary for excellence in education.

Surgical technologists are not only technical experts but also calm, reliable team members who foster collaboration and trust in high-pressure operating room environments.

Preoperative (before surgery)

Before surgery begins, surgical technologists prepare the operating room to ensure a sterile, safe environment. This thorough preparation helps prevent infections and supports patient safety throughout the procedure.

Their tasks include:

Sterilizing surgical instruments and equipment
Disinfecting and setting up the operating room
Gathering, counting, and organizing all necessary tools and supplies
Assisting with patient preparation for surgery

Intraoperative (during surgery)

Once the operation starts, surgical technologists work closely with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nurses.
